Blackheath Halls Opera is a community project, based at Blackheath Halls
in South-East London, which gives local people and school children the
chance to take part in the performance of a fully staged,
professionally produced opera. The community works with a professional
creative opera team and young professional opera singers.
The project began in 2007 with three sell out performances of Bizet’s
Carmen with a cast of professional singers alongside more than 40
amateur singers, an orchestra of over 50 players and 300 local school
children as well as local dancers, a marching band and a majorette
troupe.
In 2008 Blackheath Halls staged Puccini’s La Boheme set in 1968 during
the Paris riots. 2009’s opera is ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’ by Gluck. As
well as the usual community chorus, community orchestra and school
children, this year we will also be working with children from two
local special schools and dancers from Laban. We need singers, dancers,
instrumentalists and stage hands. You will find information about this
project and how to take part on this website.
